Ridings v. Peacehealth
Karly Ridings appealed the district court’s dismissal of her Title VII lawsuit after PeaceHealth placed her on unpaid leave for refusing a mandatory COVID-19 vaccine on religious grounds. The Ninth Circuit reversed the decision, holding that the district court must consider Ridings’ previously submitted religious exemption letter under the incorporation-by-reference doctrine because it is central to her claim. The court concluded that her objections regarding the vaccine’s fetal cell origins meet the plausibility threshold for a Title VII religious discrimination claim.

In re D.N.
The Court of Appeals of Ohio affirmed the juvenile court’s decision granting permanent custody of a child to the Cuyahoga County Division of Children and Family Services (CCDCFS). The appellate court ordered the matter remanded to the lower court to correct the record, because the mother argued that the decision was not supported by the manifest weight of the evidence.

In re P.B.
The Ohio Court of Appeals affirmed a juvenile court decision terminating a mother’s parental rights and granting permanent custody of her daughter to social services. The appellate court found the trial court’s ruling was supported by clear and convincing evidence and was in the child’s best interest because the mother failed to make significant progress on her service plan. The court also ruled that the trial court properly denied a request to extend temporary custody despite it being a first extension opportunity.

In re A.W.
The Eighth District Court of Appeals affirmed a Cuyahoga County juvenile court’s decision to grant permanent custody of a ten-year-old boy to the Department of Children and Family Services after his father failed to engage him in recommended mental-health treatment and address substance-abuse issues. The appellate court upheld the lower court's ruling, determining that clear and convincing evidence supported the finding that the child had been in the agency's temporary custody for the statutory period required for a modification to permanent custody.

In re K.N.
Father appeals the juvenile court’s order terminating his parental rights and granting permanent custody of his newborn son K.N., Jr. to Stark County Job and Family Services. Commonwealth v. Hayes
The defendant, who represented himself at trial, was convicted of stalking, witness intimidation, identity fraud, and related charges. The Appeals Court affirmed the convictions and the trial court’s order reducing the defendant's sentence, rejecting the arguments that the evidence seized from his cellphone should have been suppressed and that the jury instructions regarding authentication of electronic communications were incorrect.

State v. Hess
Timothy Hess appealed his prison sentence for strangulation, arguing the trial court failed to provide sufficient record support to impose consecutive sentences. The appellate court ruled that Hess's prior conviction under R.C. 2921.331(B) mandated his sentence to run consecutively to his existing terms in the Lorain County case. Ultimately, the court affirmed the trial court's decision and Hess's consecutive sentence.

Cleveland Hts. v. Henry
The Eighth District Court of Appeals affirmed Frank Henry’s convictions for resisting arrest and an open-container violation, ruling that the trial court did not abuse its discretion by denying his request for a continuance of the trial on the morning of proceedings. The court found that Henry’s last-minute attempt to substitute his court-appointed counsel was unreasonable because such requests are viewed as potentially made in bad faith to delay proceedings. Consequently, the appeals panel upheld the municipal court’s judgment that refused the continuance.

Bradley Hunter Golden v. the State of Texas
Bradley Hunter Golden appealed the denial of his motion to suppress the introduction of methamphetamine and psilocin, arguing that the trial court abused its discretion by admitting evidence obtained after an unreasonable protective sweep. The court agreed that the police lacked specific, articulable facts to justify the search, but it then turned to consider whether the trial court properly denied the suppression motion based on the evidence obtained under a subsequent warrant. Ultimately, the appellate court affirmed the trial court’s judgments.

Gloria Sheridan Geller is suing Uber Technologies, Inc. regarding the wrongful death of her husband after he was killed in a rideshare accident, asserting claims as an administrator of his estate. The Supreme Court of Illinois reversed the Appellate Court and upheld the circuit court’s order denying Uber’s motion to compel arbitration of the estate’s wrongful death claims, finding that Sheridan’s individual use agreement does not compel arbitration of claims stemming from her husband’s personal use of the service.

People v. Wade
Patrick Wade was convicted of two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault and two counts of aggravated kidnapping, resulting in a 40-year prison sentence.
